1 SON OF MAN
We are in fact sons and daughters of God by birth and by adoption. If Jesus is intentionally our life we will be sons and daughters of God in in spirit and in truth. The pleasure of this fellowship is ours simply by embracing the relationship forged by the trinity in earth and in heaven. There’s nothing parsimonious about our Father.
‘God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure’
Eph 1.5 NIV.
If we do not embrace our union and insist on separation – because to us Christianity is earning union - we will be sons notionally and religiously but not in spirit and in truth. Jesus said, ‘I AM LIFE.’ Paul talked of ‘Christ our life.’ In this age it is Christ who is our life and we who are spiritually alive because we have been drawn into Him. This is the gospel of the Kingdom. So don’t say, ‘I’m trying to keep close to Jesus.’ Just LIVE JESUS AS YOUR LIFE.
The mystery of our relationship is that we and Father are one – yet we are ‘ourselves’ as unique sons and daughters. We are graced and sanctified by His life as ours. And ignited in the individuality He gave us before the world began. In Him together we have community in the same manner as the trinity is one yet three. All this is in the Spirit because He has come in our flesh. As such we are the expression of Jesus personally and as the church.
Don’t live in the false piety of a religious life. Don’t live from the externalities of Christianity. You are complete in Christ who by His Spirit has included in Himself your spirit, soul and body. You have fullness in Christ. He has enveloped you not because you have performed but because He desires you.
If Christianity is our life rather than Christ Himself, we are not living in our inheritance. We are only notionally sons of God. We are separated from our identity in Christ and are poor facsimiles of our real selves. As such we are not competent to minister the new covenant spirit of sonship. Not competent because we are not sons in the sense that Jesus is the Son of His Father. But we are when Christ is our life.
‘Holy Spirit, the anointing and gifts of the Spirit are never a substitute for our new covenant union with our Father. They are the result.’
Any of us can give a religious witness, put together a homily with an illustration or two. Take a Bible study and support a position that is true. But we have furthered religion. It’s disappointing when sincere folks do this yet are unaware that they have failed to release streams of spirit and life. Failed to be a channel of spirit and life because they know about the spirit of sonship as a concept. But they cannot live it out because they are contained in the law, old covenant religion and a try-harder gospel.
‘For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility’ Eph 2.14 NIV. The two groups have been made one because all have been made one in the oneness of God.
In this age we are not living in separation from God. We are alive in union with Him.
If we have a passion to minister life to others, our life must be Jesus Himself. We are not separated from Him so this is not a feat of piety or religiosity. In the new covenant we and Father are one. This is the foundation of our being and of our life-giving ministry. This is the reality that is Kingdom life.
‘He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life’ 2 Cor 3.6 NIV.
This scripture clearly states that spirit/life comes from our union with our Father. It implies that attempted ministry from any other state or source, like the law, ministers not life but death. Yet people can spend a life-time so engaged or fifteen years in the mission field thinking they are helping God while ministering death because they ministered religion.
‘Separation’ is the assumption that drives institutionalism. This old covenant notion perpetuates Christianity as religion and unfortunately, much of what has come to be called the praise and worship ‘industry.’ Such worship is commonly held to bring us into the presence of God. The fact is though we are already in His presence and He in us. We don’t need a pastor, priest of worship leader to bring us into the presence – because we are already in Him and He in us. Some of what passes for undoing ‘separation’ is the equivalent to selling indulgences and pieces of the cross. It’s the marketing of religion. So live from where God has placed you: In Christ and in Himself.
THE SIGN OF THE COMING OF THE SON OF MAN
Jesus kicked marketers of religion out of the temple as a sign – a sign of what was to come. When Jesus cried, ‘It is finished’ the marketing of religion was done for. The posturing of Adamic religious life came to an abrupt end. Following Jesus’ resurrection and the outpouring of the Spirit the need for religion and is marketing was over. Father, Son and Holy Spirit would live in each person by the Spirit to manifest as their lives.
Separation is an assumption that imbues the Christian Industry and many formulations of church growth – along with the notion that ‘we’ as church functionaries will provide you with something you have not got and need – the presence of God. But God is already in you and with you. You are being formed in the image of Jesus – as yourself. You are a clone of none. Inferior to no one and superior to none. You are a son and daughter of God. His church is the community of sons.
As such you live in the Spirit of Sonship. You are privy to the wisdom and revelation of God. You have no need to market religion and no need to consume it. You are who you are and the Spirit of God manifests in the unique persona that is you. You are not dependent on others for the presence of He who is with you and in you. Christ is your life. His manifestation in the world is you. Living face to face with Jesus He is expressed in your face, your voice and your ways. You are ministering His life even when you are doing nothing. As such when separate and together we are the church Jesus builds without human hands.
