Jesus was His Father’s apostle. Jesus and His Father were one. Jesus lived entirely out of His Father. He was the expression of His Father in character and mission. Jesus was the manifestation of Father’s life and in this He was truly a son. Yet to see Him was to see our Father.
All of us have the capacity to be apostolic. Living in the spirit of sonship we are sons in spirit and in truth and therefore truly missional. Thanks to Jesus ‘We and our Father are one.’ This is the soil of the apostolic mission – rootedness in God and sons of our Father.
VINE AND ROOT
Jesus is the vine and we are the branches and fruit. We are the fruit in the spirit of sonship because Jesus is both vine and root who joins our being and interweaves our personhood into the trinity. Not only are we and Father one. We and the trinity are one because they live in us.
Our mission is more than charitable acts. And more than miracles. Our mission is to be spirit and life in who we are. Atheists and non-believers can involve themselves in the mitigation of misery. But only the sons and daughters of God living in oneness can be apostles of spirit and life as they share kindness and grace.
Jesus and His Father were one. He did only what His Father was doing as a result. In being an extension of His Father and revealing His nature He found joy in being Himself. This was His glory and it is ours.
Jesus did not live from the law or represent the law as is often implied and as some denominations teach. He lived entirely in His Father and from His Father to reveal His Father. As foreshadowed in the life of King David, Jesus was not bound by rite or convention. His life was found and expressed in the life of God. This is what Jesus meant when He said to the Woman at the Well, ‘It’s not about where you worship (or when you worship or what you wear). It’s about spirit and truth. What is spirit and truth? It’s Christ’s life as yours. It is the life of the trinity expressed in you and you being you. It is you be who you are according to your design and the motivation of the Spirit of God in you.
This post is not about the role of an apostle as such. It’s about apostolic people; people who are sons/daughters living in the union with Father. It’s about living in our inheritance and being vessels of spirit and life because we and heaven are one. This is the new covenant. God has declared and demonstrated in Jesus that on their own initiative they have drawn us into their life and made their life and our life one. Adam’s separation has gone. Moses’ measures no longer apply. There is a new order in the universe called the law of the spirit of life – not rules and regulations but the persons of God in you and AS YOU.
‘For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death’ Rom 8.2 ESV. You are set free to be a son, made free to be you and given authority to bind the powers of hell.
Jesus was His Father’s apostle. Jesus and His Father were one. Jesus lived entirely out of His Father. He was the expression of His Father in character and mission. Jesus was the manifestation of Father’s life and in this He was truly a son. Yet to see Him was to see our Father. But here’s the thing: To see Jesus is to see you. You are the expression of Jesus and to know Jesus in this way is to know yourself as a son/daughter of God – an apostolic person who represents Jesus and the Kingdom of God where you are.
