We are talking of the incarnation. Athanasius of Alexandria writes, “The Saviour is working mightily among men, every day He is invisibly persuading numbers of people all over the world, both within and beyond the Greek-speaking world, to accept His faith and be obedient to His teaching. Can anyone, in face of this, still doubt that He has risen and lives, or rather that He is Himself the Life? Does a dead man prick the consciences of men, so that they throw all the traditions of their fathers to the winds and bow down before the teaching of Christ?” All restored life on earth comes from the fact of restored sonship. Restored sonship is the effect of God in us. God manifesting in our person is the incarnation. The trinity in you is not for signs alone. It is so that we and Father are one, so that the life of heaven is our life and that we raise dead things and dead institutions to life. It is through the incarnation that God restores the earth. This is the unfolding of the new creation.
This is not to hinder those who heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons. Jesus said that this is the Kingdom among us. The Kingdom undoes all kinds of death. However, the incarnation is not just going about doing miracles or signs and wonders. It’s about being a son. It’s about the sharing of God’s being with us and our being with God. It’s from our sonship in Father that all else flows - our spirit and life, our nature, our life in the Spirit and our supremacy over circumstances and the Enemy. The gifts of the Spirit flow from our sonship and our sonship takes effect because of the incarnation. Jesus performed miracles not only because He was the Son but so that the sons and daughters of God would reign in the earth a the sons of God. Reigning in the earth means reigning where you are as a worshiper, simply by being a son/daughter of God. As you intentionally live in this incarnated- son- mindset you are a manifestation of our Father in spirit and in truth. You need not utter pieties, spout scriptures or moralize at people - although these may have their place as the Lord indicates. You just need to be yourself, full of the Holy Spirit, grace and authority that exceeds that of the scribes.
“On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” John 14.20.
Athanasius of Alexandria writes, “The body of the Word, then, being a real human body, in spite of its having been uniquely formed from a virgin, was of itself mortal and, like other bodies, liable to death. But the indwelling of the Word loosed it from this natural liability, so that corruption could not touch it. Thus is happened that two opposite marvels took place at once: the death of all was consummated in the Lord's body; yet, because the Word was in it, death and corruption were in the same act utterly abolished.”
Lest our focus should morbidly be on the death of death, which is a marvel in itself, let us gaze on the novelty and daring of the installation of life flowing from the person of the resurrected Jesus living in you. Unlimited life which is the Son of God appeared in the Son of Man and has made its way into each of us who will receive Him in His simplicity, unencumbered by religion, into our person, our families and our world. The incarnation means that the life of God personified is where people are. It springs up where it is because springing up and bursting forth in newness and creativity is the nature of life to the full.
Writing of this present life of God in us C Baxter Kruger writes, “The Christian God is interested in relationship with us, and not just relationship, but union, and not just union, but such a union that everything He is and has—all glory and fullness, all joy and beauty and unbridled life—is to be shared with us and to become as much ours as it is His. The plan from the beginning, in the Christian vision, is that God would give Himself to us, and nothing less, so that we could be filled to overflowing with the divine life.” ― C. Baxter Kruger, Jesus and the Undoing of Adam.
While the new creation life of God is multiplied by apostolic people, this life is not religious, pious or churchy even if it begins in such a context. It is with the trinity in us that we are fruitful and multiply human culture in the earth as the City of God which is the new creation. God’s infinite life incarnates in His daughters and sons and is there to touch every aspect of living, every facet of material culture. This life is not to be ossified and contained in religion. It is to become the life of the world – manifest in the building of houses, the invention of technology, the flowing of the arts and in every activity that we call human. This is the Kingdom of God.
